How time flies, as they say! If I recall, the last post on my modest blog was a write-up on the heels of filming Jeff Nimoy’s forthcoming Fame-ish (2019). Since then, Michael and I have continued Did You Know Anime? installments (including another Outlaw Star episode to celebrate our fifth anniversary, narrated by the one and only Bob Buchholz) and dipped our toes in the anime industry.
It was a great personal honor and professional privilege to assist AnimEigo with their Kickstarter campaign for and stunning release of Gunsmith Cats on Blu-ray. Tasked with modifying the original making-of documentary as an included special feature, Michael and I trekked across the Midwest to track down a 1994 Mercedes-Benz S 600 as seen in the series and interviewed the living legend Peter Erskine, composer of the original score for the OVA. While doing so, Peter was also able to find some lost footage of a recording session, so you’ll definitely want to check out this release!
More recently, it has also been our joy as fans of Tiger Lab Vinyl to work with founder Jon Dobyns and Tony Giles in promoting their 2019 subscription package. In case you haven’t heard, Tiger Lab is the finest producer of anime soundtracks on vinyl you’ll ever encounter: so far, the official OST for Berserk (1997) and Elfen Lied (2004) have been revealed as parts of this year’s subscription, with several more yet to be formally announced. Some of their past, highly acclaimed releases include the soundtracks to Perfect Blue (1997) and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001), to name only a couple, and I can promise you more incredible releases from other amazing titles will be coming down the pike.
With all of this plus academia to juggle, has this been enough to keep Michael and I occupied? Heck no! (Well, yes, technically, but I guess we’re both gluttons for self-inflicted punishment by way of bulging-at-the-seams schedules.) We’re just getting started, and are already in the preliminary stages of planning new projects and heading for new horizons.
